Dr Gert Tollesson is a specialist neurosurgeon and brain surgeon based in Brisbane. He obtained specialist neurosurgical registration in Sweden and Norway in 2003, moved to Australia as a consultant neurosurgeon in September 2006, and was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2007.
His brain practice covers brain and skull base tumours, aneurysms and vascular malformations, pituitary tumours, hydrocephalus, Chiari malformation, trigeminal neuralgia and hemifacial spasm, using microsurgical, endoscopic and image-guided techniques. He treats adults and children.
He consults at Watkins Medical Centre in Spring Hill, at St Andrew’s Toowoomba Hospital, and once a month in Townsville, and operates at Greenslopes Private Hospital and, for children, the Queensland Children’s Hospital. Telehealth consultations are available for patients in Medicare-approved regions. Where a condition calls for it, oncology, endocrinology, ENT, radiology and rehabilitation colleagues are involved in planning and follow-up.
Alongside the brain practice he treats conditions of the cervical spine, described separately at drtollesson.com.au, and practises within Brain and Spine Surgery Queensland. He is a member of the Neurosurgical Society of Australasia and the Spine Society of Australia, and has taught overseas, including lecturing in neurosurgery in Xi’an, China, in 2017.
Before medicine he served as an officer in the Royal Swedish Navy, where he completed peacekeeping deployments and competed for Sweden in the naval pentathlon. He later trained with the Swedish Navy as a diving medical officer, in diving medicine and hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Since 2020 he has served as a reserve officer in neurosurgery with the Royal Australian Air Force. He is married with three children and lives in Brisbane.
